Very soon you might not be able to access the dislike button on a video you don’t like. Youtube is looking for a solution against the abusive use of that “thumbs down” button.
Youtube is very mad with the dislike button, if we can put it this way. Actually, the issue they have is with people being manipulated by others, and then start an “organized attack” against a specific video. Tom Leung, director of project management at YouTube, speaks about “dislike mobs”, when describing the issue.
It happened to a Youtube video, the 2018 Rewind Video, which became the most disliked video on Youtube last year, and it was the best prove they needed to confirm that the dislike button is being used abusively. Since the video platform can’t do anything against those who press that before they even watched the video, the management of Youtube is considering some options against…the button. At the moment, what an user can do is to go to preferences and choose not to have ratings, likes and dislikes. This might is not be such a great solution, because appreciated videos won’t be recommended and this will hurt the channel’s owner.
The most extreme option is to remove the dislike button, but as Leung says “this won’t be very democratic”, because not “not all dislikes are from dislike mobs.”
“Another option is requiring more granularity when someone downvotes. If you’re going to give a downvote, maybe you have to click a checkbox as to why you don’t like this video. That could give the creator more information, and it would also give viewers pause instead of just doing it impulsively. On the other hand, that’s complicated to build, complicated to collect, and then to relay the results to the creator in analytics or Creator Studio”, Leung said on a post made to the Creator Inside. He even asked people for feedback.
