The US state of Hawaii is considering a law that will upset many people – they want to raise the minimum age a person can buy cigarettes. In five years almost nobody would legally buy cigarettes.
Smoking is one of the biggest killers on the planet and a democrat politician from Hawaii, Richard Creagan, proposed a law that wants to raise the legal age a person can buy cigarettes to 100 years by 2024.
In Hawaii the minimum age is already high. You must be 21 years old to buy cigarettes and the plan for this law is to raise it gradually in the next years. The democrat politician thinks “the cigarette is the deadliest artefact in human history”, that’s why he thinks that changing a law, that is already tough in Hawaii, it’s a must.
“Basically, we essentially have a group who are heavily addicted – in my view, enslaved by a ridiculously bad industry – which has enslaved them by designing a cigarette that is highly addictive, knowing that it highly lethal. And, it is”, Creagan told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald newspaper
The reason for the gradually raised age is economy. Cigarettes taxes bring 100 million dollars each year to the Hawaiian budget, that’s why until 2024 the raise would be gradual – 30 years in 2020, 40 years in 2021, 50 years in 2022, 60 years in 2023 and 100 years in 2024. “The state is obliged to protect the public’s health. Smoking is more lethal, more dangerous than any prescription drug, and it is more addicting. We don’t allow people free access to opioids, for instance, or any prescription drugs”, explained Creagan.
If the law will fail to pass nothing will change, but if it will succeed, it could be the beginning of the end for the legal trade of cigarettes.
Let’s enjoy it ‘till we still have the after sex cigarette!
